Our precious
Abby is growing so fast. Stephanie sent the following update today
(1-19-08):
It's been a while since I've sent out pictures, so I've attached a few: one
of Abby and her ducky taking a bath, one of her standing/bouncing, and
another of her doing her "Miss America" wave. She had her
two-month check up this week and is "an extremely healthy baby,"
in the words of her doctor. She weighs 11 1/2 pounds now and is in the
75th percentile for her weight and height (she's "fluffier" and
taller than 75% of babies her age). He said she's extremely strong for
a baby her age as well, as she holds her head up with no assistance, has
good control over her upper body, and is already standing and bouncing for
long periods. She's a very happy baby who makes her Mommy and Daddy
very happy too! She's been sleeping through the night for almost two
weeks now!
Now you know no update would be complete without new pictures as well so I
am adding three of our precious Abby below. Enjoy!

Abby
and Ducky (this is one she will love Mommy to show when she's about 18)

I
love this one - couldn't you just hug her to pieces?

Okay,
I have to admit I think our little future Beauty Queen gets the wave from
her Aunt Briana

The
ones below were taken several weeks ago, but Grandma is lagging behind.

What
a beauty!

Wonder
what she's thinking?

What
I would give to cuddle up with this one!

I
guess it must be pretty obvious why I am so very, very homesick!!
That's it for now, but stay tuned because I promise there will be more!!!
Love,
Judy

Welcome
Abigail Grace Williams
Born November
14, 2007, 5:13 pm
7 lbs 12 1/4
oz - 19" long
There are no words to describe our joy, our pride and our heartfelt
gratitude for this precious baby girl. Stephanie was admitted to
Baptist Hospital this morning for induction. Induction was delayed
because mommy ate cream of wheat for breakfast :) Someone forgot to
tell her she couldn't eat in case they had to do an emergency
C-section. They finally induced Stephanie's labor but around 5:00 pm
the doctor decided to do the emergency C-Section because our beautiful Abby
was breach. Thank God, Abby arrived healthy, perfect and beautiful and
was welcomed into her mommy and daddy's arms as all the angels sang.

Tomorrow is the big day - Abby's birthday! We'll be admitted to Baptist
Hospital at 6:30 in the morning to start the induction process. I don't
know exactly how long it will take, but she should be here some time
tomorrow afternoon.
We plan on being home Friday afternoon, as long as all goes well (and
I'm sure it will) and will send pictures and updates as soon as we can.
Please keep us in your prayers!

Here is Stephanie's latest update - oh my gosh!!!! Just one week.
I too ask that you hold Steph, Ladd and Abby in your heart and prayers.
This is it...the final week! I had my last check-up this morning. If
Abby doesn't come on her own before November 14th (a week from today),
my next visit with my doctor will be at Baptist Hospital for her
induction. It's hard to believe it's been almost 40 weeks! She weighs
6 1/2 to 7 pounds, according to her measurements and may gain another
1/2 pound by next week. Please keep us in your prayers this week, as we
get ready for her arrival!
How Abby is growing:
She has really plumped up, and is over 19 1/2 inches long! She has a
firm grasp, which you'll soon be able to test when you hold her hand for
the first time! Her organs have matured and are ready for life outside
the womb.
Wondering what color her eyes will be? You may not be
able to tell right away. If she's born with brown eyes, they'll likely
stay brown. If she's born with steel gray or dark blue eyes, they may
stay gray or blue or turn green, hazel, or brown by the time she's 9
months old. That's because a child's irises (the colored part of the
eye) may gain more pigment in the months after she's born, but they
won't get "lighter" or more blue. (Green, hazel, and brown eyes have
more pigment than gray or blue eyes.)

Another checkup and all is well. Abby isn't any
closer to arriving today than she was a week ago, but you never know!
My doctor went ahead and scheduled an induction for Wednesday, November
14th, just in case she doesn't come on her own before then (two weeks
from today - that's only a few days shy of 40 weeks).
How Abby is growing:
Abby is officially full-term! This means that if she arrives now, her
lungs should be fully mature and ready to adjust to life outside the
womb, even though her due date is still three weeks away. She weighs 6
1/3 pounds and measures a bit over 19 inches, head to heel (like a stalk
of Swiss chard).

October 24, 2007
Another check-up this morning...no changes
really. My doctor did confirm that Abby has dropped, but nothing
further to report. I'll return to the doctor in 1 week or once
contractions are 5 - 8 minutes apart, whichever comes first!
Abby is gaining about an ounce a day. She now weighs about 6 pounds and
is 19 - 20 inches long. She's shedding most of the downy hair that
covered her body, as well as the vernix caseosa, the waxy substance that
protected her skin during her nine-month amniotic bath. She's getting
ready to check out of "Hotel Mom!"

Wednesday,
October 17, 2007
We had our 35 week check-up today. All is still perfect with
Abby, and things are starting to happen! My cervix is softening and
moving into position and I'm dilated to a 1 today. Not much, but it's
definitely a start! It won't be long now!
Abby baby doesn't have much room to maneuver now that she's over 18
inches long and tips the scales at 5 pounds plus. Because it's so snug
in the womb, she isn't likely to be doing somersaults anymore, but the
number of times she kicks should remain about the same. Her kidneys are
fully developed now, and her liver can process some waste products. Most
of her basic physical development is now complete — she'll spend the
next few weeks putting on weight.

Monday,
October 15, 2007
Almost there! For those who don't
already know, we had a short stay in Baptist (2-3 hours) 2 weeks ago for
contractions that were 5 minutes apart. They gave me a shot to make
them stop and I haven't had any trouble since then. We wonder if that
was Abby's warning - Jacob was born at 36 1/2 weeks (with no
problems) after a Baptist visit and shot for early contractions at 35
weeks, so I'm expecting Abby some time around the end of the month (36 -
37 weeks)!
We had a check-up on Wednesday. My
blood pressure was a little elevated during my visit, but I have "white
coat syndrome" tendencies and believed that to be the cause. My doctor
asked me to monitor my BP at home for the next week, just to make sure.
As I suspected, my blood pressure is just fine away from her office,
usually averaging 110/75! We'll visit the doctor weekly from now on.
As you can imagine, we're anxiously awaiting her arrival!
Abby now weighs close to 5 pounds and
is almost 18 inches long! Her fat layers — which will help regulate her
body temperature once she's born — are filling her out, making her
rounder. Her skin is also smoother than ever. Her central nervous
system is maturing and her lungs are continuing to mature as well.
Babies born between 34 and 37 weeks who have no other health problems
generally do fine. They may need a short stay in the neonatal nursery
and may have a few short-term health issues, but in the long run, they
usually do as well as full-term babies.

Thursday, September 26, 2007
Here we are...32 weeks -
down to the final 4-6 weeks. She's getting big, running out of room to
in there! I still feel great so far, as does Ladd :)
We had our
check-up today and, as we expected, Abby is still perfect! Her heart
was beating at a strong 152 BPM (this is excellent for babies) and she's
now in the head-down position, getting ready for her debut in the
not-too-distant future.
How she's growing:
By
now, Abby is just shy of 4 pounds and is nearly 17 inches long, taking
up a lot of space in the uterus. Mommy is gaining about a pound a week
and roughly half of that goes right to the baby. In fact, she'll gain a
third to half of her birth weight during the coming weeks as she fattens
up for survival outside the womb. She now has toenails, fingernails, and
real hair (or at least respectable peach fuzz). Her skin is becoming
soft and smooth as she plumps up in preparation for birth.

September 10, 2007
30 weeks...WOW! Is the time flying by for you like it is for
us? Abby will be here before we know it! Some good news - after a
few meetings with a dietician and recording my glucose levels four
times a day for the past few weeks, they tell me they don't think
I'm diabetic with this pregnancy, as I was with Jacob.
I guess sticking to my diet (mostly) for this entire pregnancy has
paid off - they say that if you have gestational diabetes with one
pregnancy, your chances of developing it in subsequent pregnancies
is almost 99%! I will still monitor my glucose levels a few days a
week just to make sure nothing changes. But I no longer have to
worry about an occasional doughnut or nutty buddy :)
How she's growing?
She's a bit more than 15
1/2 inches long now, and she weighs almost 3 pounds. A pint and a half
of amniotic fluid surrounds her, but that volume will decrease as she
gets bigger and takes up more room. Her eyesight continues to develop,
though it's not very keen; even after she's born, she'll keep her eyes
closed for a good part of the day. When she does open them, she'll
respond to changes in light but will have 20/400 vision — which means
she can only make out objects a few inches from her face.

August 22,
2007
Abby is getting big! She's moving all the time and seems to enjoy
giving me a good kick in the ribs every now and then. She'll be
here in as early as 9 weeks (no more than 12). My 3-hour glucose
test results showed only 1 high number, with the other 3 being well
within the normal range. Normally, this does not indicate
gestational diabetes (it takes 3 / 4 high readings). However,
because I was diabetic during my pregnancy with Jacob, they wanted a
0/4 result. This means I'll be sticking to a diabetic diet for the
remainder of my pregnancy. I should find out later this week
whether sticking my finger four times daily will be necessary again.
What's Abby
doing this week?
She
now weighs almost 2 pounds and is about 14.4 inches long with her
legs extended. She can now open and close her eyes, and she sleeps
and wakes at regular intervals. She may suck her fingers, and
although her lungs are still immature, they would be capable of
functioning — with assistance — if she were to be born
prematurely. Baby hiccups may be common from now on. Each episode
usually lasts only a few moments, and isn't bothersome to her. With
more brain tissue developing, her brain is very active now. Wonder
what she's thinking?

August 1, 2007
We had our
24 week check-up and all is still perfect. I was tested for gestational
diabetes and my numbers came back
one point too high.
I have to go back in two weeks for a 3-hour glucose test to confirm one
way or the other. When I was tested during my pregnancy with Jacob, my
numbers were extremely high on both tests, so I'm hoping a borderline
score on the 1-hour will mean I'll pass the 3-hour test!
Abby is
moving around more and more every day. I'm starting to get a
little
uncomfortable as my belly expands and I can't seem to keep quite cool
enough. Poor Ladd, he stays cold most of the time!
What's happening with Abby this week:
She is
growing steadily, gaining about a quarter of a pound since last
week, when she was just over a pound. Since she's almost a foot
long, that makes a pretty lean figure, but her body is filling out
proportionally and she'll soon put on more baby fat. Her skin is
thin, translucent, and wrinkled, her brain is growing rapidly, and
her taste buds are developing. Her lungs are developing "branches"
of the respiratory "tree" and cells that produce surfactant, a
substance that helps the air sacs inflate easily.
Love,
Stephanie

July 25, 2007
Abby's lungs are beginning to produce surfactant, the substance that
allows the air sacs in the lungs to inflate - and keeps them from
collapsing and sticking together when they deflate. "Practice" breathing
moves amniotic fluid in and out of her lungs. She will begin to look more like a
newborn as the skin becomes less transparent and fat production kicks
into high gear. With intensive medical care, some babies born at 23
weeks can survive.

June 28, 2007
We had our 20-week ultrasound
this morning, which revealed the gender of the little one I'm carrying.
We wanted to share the news with all of you. We've already told most
of you that we were expecting a boy. Much to our surprise, we
discovered that this baby is, in fact, a baby
GIRL!
So, little miss
Abigail Grace Williams will be here sometime in early November! The
doctor that she is perfect so far, showing no signs of any abnormalities and
weighing in at a whopping 10 ounces. She's awfully pretty too! We'll send
ultrasound pictures when I get the chance to scan them in.
Here she is! I think she looks like
her Momma :)
What's happening this week: Her limbs are lengthening, and
at last, body length is catching up to head size. Bones are still malleable
but are beginning to ossify. This week, permanent teeth buds are forming
behind the milk teeth buds. Organs of reproduction are developing
rapidly, getting ready to sustain future generations. The uterus is clearly
visible.

Lyrics to Daddy's Little GirlYou're the end of the rainbow, my pot of gold,
You're daddy's little girl to have and hold.
A precious gem is what you are,
You're mommy's bright and shining star.
You're the spirit of Christmas, my star on the tree,
You're the Easter bunny to mommy and me.
You're sugar you're spice, you're everything nice,
And you're daddy's little girl.
You're the end of the rainbow, my pot of gold,
You're daddy's little girl to have and hold.
A precious gem is what you are,
You're mommy's bright and shining star.
You're the treasure I cherish so sparkling and bright,
You were touched by the holy and beautiful light.
Like angels that sing, a heavenly thing,
And you're daddy's little girl.

August 25,
2007 - Letter to Abby
My
darling granddaughter, Abigail Grace,
As we all wait anxiously for your arrival and celebrate today with your baby
shower, I wanted to write the first letter you will ever receive to tell you I
love you already. We all do. Everyone is so excited to welcome you into our
world my precious granddaughter and can’t wait to hold you and smother you with
kisses.
Abby I wish I could promise you that you will be arriving into a perfect world,
but sadly that is not the case. The world we live in is often uncertain,
confusing and harsh, but it is also filled with joy, light and magic, much of
which will come from you. What I can promise you is that you will enter into
your very own world of love and oh Abigail, you will be loved!!!!!
You have the best mommy and daddy in the world and that makes you a very lucky
little girl. You will be sheltered with love honey, more love than you can even
begin to imagine, but love I sometimes think you must already feel as you are
held safe and protected in your mommy’s womb. Mommy and daddy love each other
very much and words cannot even describe how much they love you. Aunt Bri loves
you too and will spoil you rotten, but that’s what aunts do. Uncle Ryan will
adore you and you and Cameron can have a lot of fun growing up together. And of
course, Poppup Ken will spoil you and love you, Grandpa Tom will worship the
ground you walk on and then there is me. I will love you too.
I hope I can teach you things only a grandma can teach you and that you will
always feel glad that your grandma is me. And of course, you will forever have
a special baby brother, Jacob to watch over you every day of your life. I wish
with all my heart he could be here to grow up with you Abby, but oh what stories
we will share. You have a special baby brother my dear Abby and he will always
be a part of us too. And he is with you honey, just as he is with all of us.
And one day in a world much better, you will meet him face to face. I pray life
holds many blessings for you Abigail and that God showers you with grace. I
know He will Abigail and that’s why your middle name holds so much meaning for
all of us. You will be forever loved and cherished and each of us will do
everything in our power to give you the very best we can.
Welcome dear Abigail – we can’t wait for your arrival!!! What a day of
celebration that will be. I love you honey, we all do; very, very much!!!
It's A Girl!!!!
It's official and we are all
soooooooo excited and can hardly wait for our beautiful, sweet, precious
Abigail Grace! Grandma is ecstatic and has been saying "someone give
me a baby girl :)" I redid the graphics to fit our
precious Abigail Grace but the song is strictly for my precious son in law
(son in my heart) Ladd. It's a song my daddy sang to me and one Ladd will be singing the rest of his
life - Daddy's Little Girl!

June 24, 2007 - 17 Weeks
Going
forward, growth and refinement of his
existing systems and organs occurs. His ears
stand out from his head (more or less
depending on heredity - hopefully he's not
taking after Grandpa here)! At 12
centimeters crown to rump, he is large
enough to give me a good kick in the belly,
and he does so quite often now! I am
now able to feel this five-ounce wonder
throwing his weight around.
Unique fingerprints and toe prints are
developing. Meconium, his first bowel
movement is beginning to collect in the
colon. He is actually digesting swallowed
amniotic fluid.
At
this time, fat deposits will appear
under his skin. This fat will help him to
regulate his or her temperature after birth.
Circulation of blood is now established and
the umbilical cord lengthens and thickens in
response to the rapidly growing needs of the
baby. The placenta and fetus are now almost
equal in size.

June 7,
2007
Hi
everyone! We had another appointment with
our doctor this morning and were able to hear
the baby' s heartbeat. We scheduled the
next ultrasound for Thursday, June 28th @ 8:00
am - this is the day we'll find out whether
we're having a boy or a girl!
What's
happening this week: At 4
1/2 inches long (head to bottom) and 3 1/2
ounces, our baby is about the size of an
avocado. In the next three weeks,
he'll go through a tremendous growth spurt,
doubling his weight and adding inches to his
length. The patterning of his scalp has
begun, though his hair isn't recognizable
yet. Although closed, his eyes are moving
(slowly), and he's even started growing
toenails. His fingernails and toenails will
continue to grow, so don't be surprised if
he needs them trimmed soon after birth!

May 29, 2007 - 15
Weeks
At around 4
inches long, crown to rump, our baby now weighs
about 2.5 ounces. He's busy inhaling and
exhaling amniotic fluid, which will help the air
sacs in his lungs develop. Sweat glands are
appearing, and although his eyelids are fused shut,
he can sense light. If you were to shine a
flashlight at my tummy, he'd most likely move away
from the beam. I can now feel his tiny kicks.
It will be a few more weeks before Daddy can feel
them too.
His arms have
lengthened and are in proportion to the rest of his
body. (His legs still have some growing to do,
though.) He's starting to develop an ultra-fine,
downy covering of hair all over his body (called
lanugos). His liver has started secreting bile this
week, a sign that it's already functioning properly,
and his spleen starts contributing to the production
of red blood cells. Thanks to brain impulses,
his little facial muscles are getting a workout as
he squints, frowns, and grimaces. He can grasp now,
too, and he may be able to suck his thumb.

May 10,
2007 - 13 Weeks
Attached is the newest picture of Baby Williams.
It's hard to make out, but if you look very
closely, you can see him sucking his thumb.
The doctor said everything is perfect so far!
In only 6 weeks we'll find out whether it's a boy or
girl (it's a boy!).
What's
happening this week: He's only
about 3 inches long crown to rump — roughly the size
of a jumbo shrimp — and weighs just about an ounce.
Despite the small proportions, there's a fully
formed baby inside my womb now. Much more
proportional than he was a few weeks ago, his head
is now only about a third the size of his body. His
tiny, unique fingerprints are already in place. His
kidneys and urinary tract are functional, and he's
starting to urinate out the amniotic fluid he's been
swallowing. As I start my second trimester, most
of our baby's critical development will be
completed.

May 7, 2007
Whoo hoo -
only 5 days until the cruise!!!
Our baby's hit
the 2-inch mark (about the size of a lime) and
weighs half an ounce. His face is beginning to look
more human. His eyes, which started out on the sides
of his head, have moved closer together on his face,
and his ears are near their final positions on the
sides of his head. Our baby's intestines, which have
grown so rapidly that they protrude into the
umbilical cord, will start to move into his
abdominal cavity about now. His kidneys are
secreting urine into his bladder. His nerve cells
have been multiplying rapidly, and synapses
(neurological pathways in the brain) are forming.
Our baby may have acquired more reflexes by now,
including sucking, and he'll even squirm if I prod
my abdomen.

April 30, 2007
Our baby-to-be is now 60 to 65 millimeters long or about
two and a half inches long, and weighs about 14 grams.
He or she has the ability to swallow and absorb and
discharge fluids. Hands, now complete, are growing
fingernails. Even tooth buds are appearing. Our baby's
face now has a distinctly human appearance. The amniotic
sac contains about 50 cubic centimeters of fluid (one
and one half ounces). This week, the placenta takes over
the important task of hormone production.
Love,
Stephanie and Ladd
